through the area in milpitas, hit a couple contract workers, one was killed, another in serious condition. this is northbound 680 approaching scott creek road. again, two lanes open, two- lanes closed. we'll continue to watch this and bring you a live report throughout the morning. >> all right. and we have some cool conditions around the bay area again. some 30s and 40s in the north bay valleys, 50s approaching san francisco. looks like we have some big time change coming our way for the weekend. we'll talk about it coming up. we begin with breaking news in hayward. a woman is in serious condition this morning after being shot outside an apartment complex in hayward. it happened about 11:00 last night at a complex on sleepy hollow avenue. she was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. she is in surgery this morning. police are still at the scene of the shooting and are continuing to investigate there. a couple of north bay boys spent halloween night in the hospital after they were hit by a truck while trick or treating.

it happened at about 7:00 last night at cloverdale boulevard and hillsburg avenue. one boy was flown to the hospital with broken legs. the suffered shoulders and head trauma. the 75-year-old driver was unhurt and is cooperating. parents of a stillborn child are suing a daly city hospital after their child's body was lost. kpix 5's joe vazquez with how seton medical center lost the body. reporter: seton hospital, october 28th of last year, the family from daly city was devastated by the stillborn birth of their daughter. but later as they were preparing for the funeral, hospital officials informed them of another problem, after a nurse wrapped the baby in a sheet. the body was not taken to the morgue. instead, she was accidentally thrown in with the laundry. but wait. it gets worse. according to the lawsuit, laundry here at seton hospital is shipped off premises to santa cruz 70 miles away and it was a worker at that off site facility who discovered the

baby's body as it was on a conveyor belt headed into on industrial washing machine. >> they are very much in our thoughts and prayers. >> reporter: seton hospital's spokesman says because it's a lawsuit she can't talk about it. >> we can't comment beyond acknowledging the fact that this is pending litigation. but our hearts certainly go out to this family and everyone here is praying for their comfort and consolation. >> reporter: in daly city, joe vazquez, kpix 5. a 29-year-old man is accused of leaving his children locked in an suv for more than 14 hours overnight. julio reyes of san jose was arrested wednesday night. milpitas police say a woman called 911 saying a ford explorer had been parked all night near a home with people in it. officers found a 10-year-old girl and 8-year-old boy inside. >> the children were very cold, very tired, very hungry. so the officers took them into

protective custody and brought them back here to the police station. >> police say reyes admitted he went to a friend's house and left the kids and suv behind. he faces a felony child endangerment charge. stanford university believes norovirus is to blame for sickening dozens of students on the campus. 52 students all ate at the florence moore dining hall. they complained about flu-like symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea tuesday and wednesday. four were briefly hospitalized for dehydration. workers have been sanitizing the dining hall common areas and bathrooms in the complex. more details are now emerging about life at a castro valley assisted care facility after it was closed with a skeleton crew taking care of several residents inside. a janitor told the "contra costa times" he and a coworker were giving them food, medicine and cleaning up after the patients. this all allegedly happened after state officials revoked the facility's license. the remaining patients were

removed last week. the fbi is now discussing possible charges. a united express flight from san francisco to san antonio made an unscheduled stop in phoenix after a threatening note was found on the plane. the passengers were taken off the regional jet at 4:45 yesterday afternoon and bused to the terminal. a bomb squad and police dog searched the plane. a short time later passengers were back on their way. it's a mystery no more. we have uncovered what google is up to off san francisco's treasure island. >> yeah. and a kpix 5 exclusive our ken bastida has confirmed the barge is a private showroom floating on the bay. reporter: a source familiar with the highly secretive project confirms it's been ongoing for more than a year spawned in the so-called google x division of the company, cloaked in secrecy even from most employees, but personally directed by google's cofounder sergey brin. a movable high-tech showroom for google projects and

products reserved for only the most high level vips and tech geeks, essentially a four-story portable building constructed of interchangeable 40-foot shipping containers that can be assembled and disassembled at will. it's designed to be placed on everything from barges to railcars and reassembled anywhere in the world. it could be at a ski resort one morning and on the beach at malibu days later. sources tell us it's google's multi-million dollar response to apple's highly successful apple store concept but with an invitation-only requirement. there is only one problem: the company was informed by the u.s. coast guard last summer that the structure, which is meant to contain three floors of dazzling showrooms and an upper party deck complete with lanais and bars, that it is in essence a floating vessel and subject to all applicable

federal maritime regulations. construction appears stalled at present while google struggles to work within the coast guard's strict safety requirements. in the meantime, it sits moored in san francisco bay amid tight security. ken bastida, kpix 5. >> kpix 5's allen martin has been pursuing the mystery behind the barge for days now and the no comments have been piling up. as he reports for google, the mystery may be the mastery. reporter: with every knock on the door -- >> i don't know anything about it. i honestly don't. >> reporter: -- every phone call and email, the no comments are stacking up the more we ask about google's barge and four- story building at treasure island. google itself isn't commenting. the mayor says he knows nothing about it. san francisco supervisor jane kim who represents treasure island had a spokesperson tell us she had no comment but might say something in a week. then there's the u.s. coast guard. it issued a slightly longer statement than the day before, saying it has an obligation to

protect sensitive proprietary information and regarding barge bal-0010 moored at treasure island, coast guard personnel have been on board to conduct routine inspections and ensure compliance with safety, security and environmental protection regulations. but surprisingly, they won't say whether the barge is in compliance. allen martin, kpix 5. >> allen did obtain a lease agreement the owners of the barges has with the treasure island authority. by and large has a one-year lease for the pier, outside property, and hangar 3. it's a total of 727,000 square feet in inside, almost $80,000 a month plus damages and a security deposit. >> so the mystery is solved. >> maybe more companies start doing that? >> hey. >> maybe they start renting barges. >> they have another one in maine? >> maybe the new thing. happy friday! >> good to see you today. we have some changes coming up as we head toward the weekend. but today, likely going to be

the warmest day of the weekend joy it. still, we are starting out mostly clear skies and a bit on the chilly side early on this morning in some spots especially in the north bay valleys again where those temperatures are dipping down to 39 degrees in santa rosa, 49 in san jose, 54 in san francisco and 51 degrees in oakland. by this afternoon, get a load of these numbers, mid- to upper 70s in some spots in the interior valleys. as high as 76 degrees today in san jose. along the coastline, plenty of sunshine into the 60s and san francisco could even check in at a very pleasant 71 degrees. we have some changes though coming up for the weekend. we'll have more on that in a moment. right now let's check out your "kcbs traffic" with elizabeth. >> thank you, lawrence. we continue to follow this breaking news. tragic news out of milpitas this morning, we are getting our first live pictures at the scene and some of the slowdowns. the driver ran into a construction zone and one worker was killed on interstate 680. it all happened before 3 a.m. another worker has some minor

injuries. this is the northbound lanes of 680 approaching scott creek road. we have learned the victim was a contractor. he did some contract work for caltrans. and the two workers that were hurt were removing a road sign and that's when the driver of this car came barreling through. still no word on a cause or how or why exactly this happened. our crews are out there now gathering information. but in the meantime, you can expect delays through milpitas. let's get a check of our maps and our sensors are picking up a few slowdowns for at least one exit as you approach scott creek road. all right. here's a live look outside. a quick check of your bay area bridges. so far, so good over at the bay bridge toll plaza. no delay there. and the san mateo bridge also moving at the speed limit this morning leaving hayward. that is your latest "kcbs traffic." back to you guys. >> liz, thanks. 4:39 now. effective today millions of americans will have even more trouble getting enough food to eat. kpix 5's brian webb shows us for many it all comes down to

$432 a year in groceries. reporter: >> i already know what i'm going to eat tonight. >> reporter: brenda white started using food stamps five months ago. it helps a little. tonight it's a small salad and soda. >> i go grocery shopping, that's $23 in cash that i can have i might want to pay it on a bill or something. >> reporter: for 47 million americans on the food stamp program called snap a big chunk of benefits will disappear for a family of four on the maximum benefits that's $432 a year gone or $36 a month. 36 may not sound like much but it's the equivalent of 21 individual meals a month off the table for things like beans, bread, fruits and vegetables. bay area food banks are bracing for the fallout at a time they are already stretched thin handing out food to 147,000 people in san francisco and marin counties every week. >> there's no buffer for people at the low income spectrum. whatever hits them hits them in

in kansas, and plunged into rushing creek ye a terrifying ride home for some students here on the schoolbus. their bus drove off a flooded road in kansas and plunged into a rushing creek below yesterday. all ten children managed to escape through windows and emergency exits before rescue

crews pulled them to safety. >> i told them be quiet so the bus driver could concentrate, and then it was -- we didn't know much what to do, and we all panicked and got out safely. >> brave little guy there. only the bus driver was injured. he was flown to a hospital and right now he is in serious condition. silicon valley help is on the way to fix the federal government's healthcare website. michael dickerson a google engineer has been recruited to address numerous problems plaguing healthcare.gov. software companies oracle and red hat will also take part in the effort. newly released documents show only 6 people successfully enrolled through healthcare.gov in its first day of operation. only 248 had enrolled by the end of the second day. these figures don't include those who enrolled on various state websites. the documents are based on meetings at an obama administration war room obtained by congressman darrell issa, a republican from southern california. every year millions of

people donate their blood for free. but wait until you see what christin ayers discovered happens to those free donations. it's a story you will only see right here on kpix 5. reporter: watson gives blood to help her community. >> saving a life is priceless. >> reporter: but her donation doesn't stay local or priceless for long. at blood banks like this one that the red cross runs in oakland, blood gets separated into products, red blood cells, plasma and platelets. >> we get the most out of each donation that way. >> reporter: the red cross's bay area spokesman jared schultzman says it's an expensive process. >> for us to collect, test and process the blood and distribute it, we incur great fees. >> reporter: the cost has to be passed on and that's why blood is big business. >> it is one very valuable commodity. >> reporter: arthur kaplan is

one of the country's leading experts on blood. >> think of it as oil. it has to be refined and moved and shipped. >> reporter: he says the fda regulates the safety of the blood supply. but what about prices? >> i have seen it happen when there are shortages of particular blood products that people just gouge. >> reporter: the red cross and an umbrella group of blood banks called blood systems controls the u.s. blood supply. hospitals are their main customers. >> our physicians need it every day really for emergency care as well as for routine medical and surgical care. >> reporter: a unit of plasma runs about $50. red blood cells, about $250. platelets are the most perishable and the most expensive, about $525 per unit. then hospitals tack on their own surcharges. >> it's a real cost. in our system we choose to have it here paid as part of hospital bills. >> reporter: then there's the

blood that goes overseas. just through july of this year, more than $1 billion worth of blood products was ex-supported to over 100 kun -- exported to over 100 countries mostly in europe. the biggest importers, germany, austria and spain. most of the exports are frozen plasma but drugs made out of blood components are also exported. turns out, nonprofit blood banks sell donated blood components to for-profit drug companies. the blood banks we talked to didn't seem eager to discuss that. >> i don't know a whole lot about the financial side. >> they do best by saying to people, please make a gift. help a neighbor. and let me add, i'm a blood donor and i support it. but that doesn't mean that the industry side of this business couldn't use a tougher examination. >> reporter: christin ayers, kpix 5. >> here in the u.s., you can't sell your blood. you have to donate it. the law was created to keep the blood supply safe. federal investigators say

they have shut down an elaborate drug smuggling tunnel between tijuana, mexico, and san diego. they say the tunnel was equipped with lighting, ventilation and even an electrical rail system. it linked warehouses in tijuana and the otay mesa industrial area in southern san diego. >> this complex underground passageway zigzags for a third of a mile under the border at a depth of approximately 35 feet. >> the tunnel was just recent ply completed so no drugs made it through. federal agents did seize 8.5 tons of marijuana and 327 pounds of cocaine from facilities related to the tunnel. three men have been arrested. it is 4:48. it is friday. the all-important weekend forecast is here. >> yes. >> teeing you up. >> just getting ready. halloween last night, a lot of kids recovering from the candy hangover but here we go. >> so am i. >> mama! >> getting ready to go for friday and the weekend. got some changes coming our way

enjoy today likely going to be the nicest day of the week. but over the weekend, winds going to be kicking up. the temperatures really going to be cooling down. 40s and 50s out the door right now although we have seen some upper 30s in some of the north bay valleys. mostly clear skies. and on the cool side. this afternoon, we have some sunshine, some of the temperatures in the valleys near 80 degrees by the afternoon. a lot of 70s inside the bay. and we have some 60s out toward the coastline. high pressure remaining in control for today but that's all about to change. enjoy the sunshine off the coastline. got this system moving in from the gulf of alaska. not going to bring us any rain but it will bring in a few clouds, cooler temperatures and winds kicking up especially toward tomorrow afternoon. so with that in mind, sunny skies today, should be a beautiful day indeed. 76 degrees in san jose. 78 in morgan hill. a beautiful 66 in pacifica. then you have a lot of 70s showing up into the east bay as high as 78 degrees in pleasanton. 78 in san ramon. and about 76 degrees in fairfield. inside the bay beautiful sunshine all day long.

a very nice 71 degrees in san francisco. and 74 in petaluma. well, things begin to change though toward tomorrow. that cold front dives into the bay area not going to bring us any rain but a few clouds and the winds going to be whipping up toward the afternoon. cooler on sunday. then maybe a chance of showers as we get toward the latter part of next week. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> thank you, lawrence. it's still a breaking situation in milpitas and our delays are growing as well after this accident own night involving a construction worker. it happened shortly before 3:00 this morning. a worker contracted by caltrans was hit and killed on northbound 680 near milpitas approaching the scott creek exit. the driver of a car veered into a work truck. it was parked on the shoulder. the crew was out there removing a road sign. one person again contracted by caltrans was killed. another person hurt minor injuries there. one lane of northbound 680 is shut down while the investigation continues.

let's check the other roads and maps. so again you can see the delays on our sensors in the area. right now it's backed up for about one exit. but if they continue to close that one lane, the delays will of course continue to grow, as well. outside here is a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. it is a friday morning commute if you are heading into san francisco right now. there is some roadwork on the lower deck heading towards the east bay. they have various lanes blocked. san mateo bridge traffic still moving at the speed limit. in fact, extra light volume so far between hayward and foster city. we also just checked in with bart and so far mass transit all running on time and all bart trains should have more than 20 all on schedule. that is your latest "kcbs traffic." back to you. ♪[ music ] [ thriller ] >> she's moving. halloween night fun here in san francisco. check out the moves. we are in the castro district last night when a flash mob danced to michael jackson's thriller. the city cancelled the official party in the castro back in 2006 after it got out of hand.

the rules on airline passe' use of portable electronic devices. things like e- readers and s can be used in all phases of fl fs, the federal government is easing the rules on airline packages using portable electronic devices. things like ereaders and games can be used intakeoffs, landings and taxiing. smartphones can also be used but phone calls and text messaging are still banned. each airline has to implement the changes so they may not take effect immediately. but jetblue and delta say they are ready to deal with the looser restrictions starting today. a new beer is out of the world. dogfish has started making a beer with moon dust in it. it's called celeste jewel ale and made with lunar meteorites grounds up into dust. >> it's for off centered people. by the inherent nut statement we are going to be a niche statement and not appeal to the status quo and we're able to grow because more people want it. >> who doesn't want moon dust
